CREATE A SPACE
Let’s talk about the Secret Place.
You HAVE to create a space.
A special place that you go to be alone with God.
Just like Jesus often went away from everyone to talk with God, to pray, and spend time with Him.
This is where he went to dwell,
where He received instruction,
where He received comfort,
where He received peace,
where He received revelation.
Having a space where you can shut the door, remove distractions, and focus solely on you and the Holy Spirit is essential to living a full life as a Christian.
Developing a healthy prayer life is instrumental in your walk with God.
Matthew 6:6 (KJV)
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
So when you pray in secret, when you take the time to sit with Him no matter what your schedule looks like, He will restore your time, and He will reward you with the things you have been working toward, because you put Him first.
Psalm 71:3 (KJV)
Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.
We may be weak, but He is our strong refuge that we can continually run to. It is God’s will that we are saved and we
can be confident that He is our rock and fortress. A fortress is defined as a fortified place or stronghold according to
Merriam Webster.
Psalm 31:20 (KJV)
Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.
Understanding that the Secret Place is for EVERY Christian is important.
God desires a relationship with every single one of His sheep.
He wants everyone to trust Him.
He wants everyone to come into His presence.
He wants to shield you from the enemy.
The devil dare not come nigh you.
You are so secure in His presence that you are safe from the attack of the words of others.
CREATING THE ATMOSPHERE
It doesn’t have to be perfect.
It just has to be a space you can go where it is quiet and safe.
You can play instrumental music.
You can light a candle if you’d like.
Anoint your space with anointing oil.
Get into your space and invite the Holy Spirit to come in and take residence.
Ask the Holy Spirit to come in and saturate and sanctify that space.
Bring your bible and notebook.
Everyone hears differently from the Lord, but writing down on paper has worked wonders for me.
I’m able to write clearly what the Lord is saying and go back and reference it when I need to.
Your space is where you can cry.
Where you can pray.
Where you can yell.
Where you can throw a fit.
Where you can be vulnerable.
Where you can receive wisdom and clarity.
Even if it is a plain little place you sit, The Lord will come and meet you when you call on Him.
Exodus 20:24 (KJV)
An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.
We no longer have to find a sheep or an oxen to sacrifice.
We just bring ourselves.
We come with all of our mess.
All of our issues.
All of our burdens, and we lay them down.
We call on His name, and He will come.
Create the space.
Create the atmosphere.
It will change your life in ways you can’t begin to imagine.
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT
Relationships require nurturing. If you’re into plants, you know that your plants require attention to their needs,
they need water and nutrients to grow.
If you’re into cooking, you know that your food needs seasoning to enhance its taste.
If you’re into painting, you know that the details of the brush strokes and the type of paint matters.
When you nurture your relationship with God,
He will trust you with more.
When you sit with Him and read His word,
you begin to understand who He is and His heart for people.
You start to see the WHY behind things.
He removes the veil and opens your spiritual vision and hearing.
You see differently.
You hear differently.
You can’t unsee what He shows you.
You grow in wisdom.
You grow in discernment.
You are able to recognize what is from Him and what isn’t.
Being in the Secret Place strengthens your personal prayer life and stirs that fire and intimacy for Jesus.
The world is so busy.
Everything takes our time from calls/texts, work, family, business, and even church and ministry obligations.
While all of these things can be good, can be blessings, and are also things that the Lord has blessed us with to
steward, the most important thing is that we take the time to sit with Him.
We cannot neglect time with Him and expect things to go according to His will.
Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Basically, put God’s kingdom first.
He will take care of everything else.
He promises us that He is our provider.
He is the author of our story.
Our story isn’t left unread, He finishes it.
As you go deeper into your relationship with God and the Holy Spirit reveals things to you,
It is not easy because you see things, you are responsible for what He shows you.
You have to take action, and sometimes that action is not comfortable.
You go through a pruning and a refining in all areas of your life.
But in the name of Jesus, all delay and stagnation will fall off of you as you go deeper into His presence and allow
Him to transform your life and take you to new heights that no man could take you to.
ALLOWING HIM TO FILL THE VOID
How many times have you chosen to go to something else when you have had a hard day?
Maybe that favorite meal or dessert, that favorite tv show, or even just searching for a podcast or sermon that you
thought would bring you that edification you felt you needed.
But instead, you still felt hungry in the physical and in the spirit.
Something was missing.
You plopped down in bed with that feeling of dissatisfaction.
You go to sleep, only to get up and start another day trying to do it all on your own strength.
The bible clearly says in Phillippians 4:13
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
In 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (KJV) it says,“And then He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distress, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
Paul had a thorn in his side, but rather than remove it, God gave him grace and strength to meet his every need.
That’s what He does for us.
What you needed in those moments after a long hard day was to go into your space, your closet, your car, wherever
your alone spot is and shut the door.
Shut out the world.
Shut out the noise.
Shut out the distractions.
Enter into the peace of the Lord that surpasses all understanding.
Allow Him to minister to your spirit.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 (KJV)
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He is setting you apart.
He is separating you, creating a distinction between you and the world.
Removing the old and bringing in the new.
We are spiritual beings in a physical body that require rest.
Allow Him to give you rest.
Allow Him to remove the heavy burdens.
Allow Him to place His yoke of peace upon you.
Matthew 11:28 (KJV)
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Jeremiah 31:25 (KJV)
For I will refresh with weary soul and replenish all who are weak.
Psalm 91:1 (KJV)
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Psalms 27:5 (KJV)
For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His shelter; He will conceal me under the cover of His tent; He will set me high upon a rock.
When life starts to rain burdens on you, He hides you, conceals you.
When life gets flooded, He is placing you up on a rock.
Exodus 33:14 (KJV)
And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest…
When our spirit is at peace and rest, our physical body is able to operate in peace.
Our responses to the things the enemy throws at us are less likely to be with a snappy or angry emotion.
We are less likely to think with our flesh and more likely to discern by the spirit.
We are more likely to operate exemplifying the fruits of the spirit and the character of Jesus.
We are more likely to react with love and wisdom.
WHAT TO DO IN THE SECRET PLACE
Quiet your spirit.
Silence phone, remove all distractions.
Worship Him.
Begin with praise and thanksgiving “enter His gates with thanksgiving and praise”
Repent for any sins known and unknown.
Go into prayer and bring your bible and journal.
Read your word.
Psalm 119:114 (KJV)
You are my hiding place and my shield; I put my hope in Your word.
Psalm 17:8 (KJV)
Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings.
Psalm 32:7 (KJV)
Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.
Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
The word of God is like a spotlight on your soul.
God is the physician.
The greatest physician.
He is the surgeon.
He is able to diagnose, and not treat, but CURE all things.
He opens up the deepest parts of us and goes to work.
His light goes deep down into the bone and marrow.
His word brings exposure to the areas of darkness that need to come to light.
His word cleanses us. (John 15:3)
His word heals us. (Psalm 107:20)
His word strengthens us. (Psalm 119:24)
His word delivers us. (Matt 8:8, Matt 8:16)
Have you ever been listening to someone preach a sermon or share a testimony that hit you like a ton of bricks?
You just KNEW that person wrote that JUST for you.
It wasn’t them.
It was the sharp points of the sword of the word of God.
It pierced you in the right place,
exposing the infected area so the Lord could take care of it.
He knows your deepest thoughts and your hearts’ hidden intentions.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (KV)
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Your joy is not in your circumstances but in Him.
Because our situation always changes but He doesn’t.
We are to pray continually, meaning stay in constant communication with Him.
Keep that conversation flowing with Him at all times.
Ephesians 5:26 (KJV)
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.
Jesus sacrificed Himself for us which provided cleansing for us from every stain that sin makes in our lives.
His living word as it is preached and proclaimed, cleanses us.
The more we read it.
The more we hear it.
The more we understand it.
The more we are cleaned and sanctified for His glory.
